The Fight Is On! Free Tony Rice!
Thanks to all of you who wrote to complain to KALW management about the sudden cancellation of my special tribute to legendary guitarist Tony Rice on January 16th. It’s now been three weeks since the pre-emption—I’m sorry to report that management hasn’t budged so far. That means Saturday afternoons will remain automated “for the foreseeable future” and I will no longer be allowed to come into the studio and live-host my own program.
We started a media campaign to protest the Saturday afternoon automation. Last Friday January 29th, the San Francisco Examiner reported on the controversy: "KALW staff say live announcers increasingly replaced by automation and pre-recorded shows; Management at SFUSD-licensed station said changes made due to pandemic, not intended to be permanent" (2021-01-29, sfexaminer.com/entertainment/kalw-staff-say-live-announcers-increasingly-replaced-by-automation-and-pre-recorded-shows/) [archive.is/pbDOR].
And in the latest edition of the AmeriCeltic newsletter, guest author Vince Piantanida issued a call to action: "Will Folk Fizzle on KALW-FM? Help Bring Back Live, Local Celtic & Folk Music Programming" (2021-02-04, americeltic.net/newsletter/) [archive.is/5OhtF#selection-1649.0-1649.28].
If I am allowed back on the air on Saturdays, the first program you’ll hear will be the long-delayed Tony Rice special that I promised.
Please keep up the pressure! Keep sending your concerns to KALW management (kalw@kalw.org) AND the San Francisco School Board (lopezg1@sfusd.edu) and demand an end to automation on Saturday afternoons. (and please copy me at kalwfolk@sonic.net).
Your comments DO make a big difference!! And with your help, Folk Music & Beyond will once again resume live hosting with brand new programs. You deserve the best quality programming available! Don’t settle for second best!

Artists are advised to check in on the Berkeley Flea Market, Sat. & Sun, morning until roughly 5 or 6pm. Magic, enchantment, wares and beauty are to be found alongside organic foods and foreign incense. Participate in the magic drum circle by standing there and vibing within the sound.
